Gabby Malpas: Aotearoa Art Fair 2026

New Zealand born Gabby Malpas, a Chinese "transracial" adoptee raised by white parents, experiences racism through a white lens. Reclaiming her Chinese cultural heritage later in life, Malpas is an activist addressing cultural identity, racism and immigration.
A graduate of the Otago Art School, Dunedin with a major in ceramics, Malpas will return to produce a series of ceramic totems for Aotearoa Art Fair, each taking a fascinating and satirical hybrid form and bringing together ancient Chinese temple motifs and Māori mythology.
In Malpas’ words, “It’s taken me a long time to embrace my NZ roots in my art but its time. The inclusion of vessels shaped in the form of durians, represent Hine-nui-te-pō , the goddess of death and the underworld”. The whole installation will be rich with ancient and contemporary iconography. Malpas is a multi-finalist in the Ravenswood, Paddington and Mosman Art Prizes held annually in Sydney Australia.
