Gabrielle Pool New Zealand; Australia, b. 1976-
Gabrielle Pool is an established New Zealand born artist who has been exhibiting internationally since 1993. Over more than three decades she has held more than 30 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, North America, Europe and the Caribbean.
Her practice has been shaped by an itinerant life and a deep curiosity about place, culture and landscape. An early mentorship in Japan had a lasting influence on her approach to painting, while extensive travel has taken her from the mountains of Guilin in China to the remote Omo River region of Southern Ethiopia, Kenya and the Northern Territory of Australia.
In 2004, Pool travelled to Ethiopia to work among the Hamer people, developing her own techniques using traditional body paints and pigments. She later worked with Maasai communities in Kenya and Indigenous women artists in Utopia, Central Australia. These experiences became an important part of her artistic development and her exploration of natural pigments, colour and the relationship between people and their environment.
"My painting has always been driven by a desire to preserve and record the history of ancient people and their environments, in a world that seems to be trying its very best to eradicate them and 'civilize' them."
Landscape has remained a constant throughout Pool's practice. She has painted in diverse environments across Australia and internationally, working directly from the landscape and responding to its colour, atmosphere, geology and changing light. Her recent work has focused particularly on the Australian landscape, including extensive plein air painting in the Northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia in 2024, where she worked with local ochres and pigments.
Pool's work has been selected as a finalist in the Sir John Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Mosman Art Prize, the Paddington Art Prize and the Hawkesbury Landscape Prize. Her work includes large scale commissions and is held in private and corporate collections internationally. Her work has also been featured by TVNZ as a feature length documentary, NZ TV series about artist and National Geographic.
