"This exhibition comes from a winter 4WD plein air painting trip through the Northern Flinders Ranges, which took us through Cradock, Willow Springs, Blinman, and Lyndhurst.

We volunteered at Iga Warta, where the Adnyamathanha people have held a continuous connection to this country for roughly 49,000 years.  Becoming friends with Elder Terence Coulthard, he welcomed us warmly and generously gifted us traditional ochres and pigments with which to paint.

Standing out there, you are looking at the sheer scale of a landscape with rock formations dating back 600 million years. Long ago, immense shifting forces buckled the earth, pushing these massive stone layers upward before endless ages of wind and rain carved the high peaks down into the rugged ridges we see today. Watching the way the afternoon light casts itself across this ground felt exactly like the vast horizons I've experienced in Africa. It was also a warming reminder of childhood memories from when I was seven, visiting my mother's cousins who ran a station at Wilpena Pound.

These paintings are a direct response to that vast, ancient quiet, and the humbling scale of the Flinders." Gabrielle Pool, 2026
